Good Karma Project

The Global Shapers Gold Coast's Good Karma Project collects and reinvests container refunds back into the circular economy to support sustainability initiatives within the Gold Coast and Logan areas.

One of these initiatives is a free bi-monthly ecology camp. Collaborating with Gold Coast Intrepid Landcare, these ecology camps are designed to increase the capacity of young people to take a lead on making positive change for the environment and provide a space for them to connect with like-minded individuals in their age group. This solution aims to provide these young people with a connection to the natural world and capacity to recognise and respond to threatening ecological processes which we hope will be passed on for generations to come.

Expected Impact

Funds raised by the Good Karma Project will help fund catering and resource requirements (gardening tools, camping equipment etc) for each camp, while also diverting plastic from landfill and the ocean.

Expected Impact: 100,000 bottles/1.3M grams of plastic diverted from landfill and the ocean (@ 13.7 grams per plastic bottle) 100,000 bottles and cans recycled. Six free ecology camps per year, empowering up to 120 young people through a 20 hour immersive, hands-on program (excludes sleeping time of course!). Monetary value of volunteer support equivalent to $47,616 (based on current minimum wage of $19.84 p/h) 2400 volunteer hours dedicated to bush restoration, regeneration, education, event facilitation and engagement over the year) Up to 480 meals provided during the camp per year (morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, breakfast). #cost-saving for local government (to be determined)
